St. Maarten Cruise Excursions & Shore Tours Information

 St. Maarten Information and Photos

St Maarten is the Dutch pronunciation. St Martin, is the French, but which ever way you say it, this little island oozes charm and atmosphere. Traffic Jams happen due to everyone trying to give way to everyone else! Its people are friendly and open. They reflect theBeaches in St Maarten culmination of settlement dating back to the original inhabitants of the Island, the Arawak indians, who gave the islands its original name of Souliga (land of salt) due to its extensive salt ponds and deposits.

In later times, these peaceful people gave way to the more forceful Carib Indians. During the 16th & 17th Century, the island, like many in the Caribbean, became subject of violent squabbles between the relevant colonial powers of the time, as well as being a haunt for famous pirates and privateers. Occupied and fought over, by the Spanish, English and finally the Dutch & French, its an island with a rich history, and the remains of Fort Amsterdam at Philipsburg, and Fort Louis at Marigot bear testament to those turbulent times. Eventually the Dutch and French divided the island, as legend has it, by sending two soldiers around the perimeter.  Wherever they would meet, would be the border, that you will still see marked today. Unfortunately, the Dutch soldier had his water bottle spiked with gin and "got waylaid", hence the French ending up with the larger portion! 20.5 square miles on the French side, and 16.5 square miles on theScenic St Maarten Dutch side.

Its an island that has everything, from great excursions by land or sea, casinos, 37 beautiful beaches, and famous international cuisine & chefs. Home to the largest Mega Yacht fleet in the world its also a chic jetsetter destination in its own right.

Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the East, and the Caribbean sea to the west, St Maarten boasts a wonderful climate year round and warm tropical waters.

The population of the Dutch side is around 47,000, and the French side is around 55,000. To call from a house on the Dutch side to a house a few yards away on the French side will be charged as an international call to France!, and each house will have different voltages! (110 Dutch Side / 220 French Side).

Languages spoken include Dutch/French/Spanish and of course Creole and Papiamento dialects. Don't worry, everyone speaks English too!

Dollars are the widely accepted currency, although the official currency of the French Side is the Euro.

This unique dual nationality island is the smallest landmass in the world to be divided between two sovereign nations. . The highest point on the Island is Pic Paradise at 1,392ft, and on a clear day you can see 9 other Caribbean islands from this spot!

One of our favorite islands due its wide range of available activities and friendly people, its a great place to get out and about for the day.
